An intersting articles in PLoS Biology mirrored on eSS:http://www.esocialsciences.org/Articles/showArticle.aspx?acat=Recent+Articles&aid=4638 It discusses interesting features of the open access phenomenon and the author commends authors who publish in open access journals. But most of these open access journals are in fact open for publication only to authors who can pay. That is, once the paper is accepted for publication the author has to pay a fee---and for us in India and other such countries, quite a steep fee. I feel that this puts the journal out of the publishing orbit of most Indian scholars who can't get a paper published simply because they cannot pay to get it published. On the other hand, publishers have to devise some means of recovering the cost of publishing---open source or ptherwise. ITs been quite a dilemma and several models have emerged. Any comments? Any of you had your papers published in these open access refereed journals?
